Rosneft confirms deal for pilot Arctic 2 LNG carrier

Rosneft has confirmed the first LNG carrier contract signing for Novatek's Arctic 2 LNG project.

It said its Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex has finalised a deal to build the pilot vessel for state shipowner Sovcomflot, with the newbuilding due in the first quarter of 2023.

"The pilot gas carrier vessel for Arctic LNG 2 will meet the design requirements for Christophe de Margerie vessels ordered for Novatek’s project in South Korea in 2013 in order to provide support to Yamal LNG and ensure year-round transportation of LNG in harsh ice conditions of the Kara Sea and the Gulf of Ob," Rosneft said.

The order marks the first time such a ship will be built in Russia.

The vessel’s design allows it to operate in ice up to 2.1 metres thick.

The power-package capacity of the gas carrier is 45 MW, comparable to a nuclear-power icebreaker. It will mainly be powered by LNG.

Novatek sources said this week a deal had been signed with Sovcomflot.

The charter with Novatek is said to be valid for 25 years.

Industry sources said the two companies had been working on finalising both the shipbuilding and time-charter contracts on what will be a flagship ice-breaking vessel for the new liquefaction project on the Gydan Peninsula in the Russian Arctic.

The ship would mirror Sovcomflot’s Arc7, 172,600-cbm Christophe de Margerie (built 2017).

Russia’s ministry of industry and trade said in December that Novatek had signed a preliminary deal with Zvezda, reserving slots for up to 15 Arc7 LNG carriers with deliveries slated for 2022 and 2023 to coincide with the 19.8-million-tonne-per-annum project’s planned start-up.
