Valerian Albanov (1882-1919) was a polar explorer and a navigator for Georgy Brusilov's expedition; he took part in the drifting of the Saint Anne steam schooner and an expedition to Franz Josef Land.
The lead ship in a series of unique Arctic shuttle tankers bears his name. This vessel, for the first time in the history of navigation, began shipping oil from the mouth of the Ob River all year-round as part of the development of the Novoportovskoe oil deposit. The ships operate in the Arctic region which, in the beginning of the 20th century, was explored by Georgy Brusilov’s expedition.
The tanker Shturman Albanov meets the highest navigational safety standards. In December 2016, she became the world's first tanker to receive a Polar Ship Certificate. This document confirms the vessel's compliance with the requirements of the Polar Code, which entered into force on 1 January 2017.
