Yuri Senkevich was a famous doctor, explorer, traveller and a TV presenter.
Yuri Senkevich was elected Academician of the Russian TV Academy, President of the Russian Travellers' Association, Member of the Writers' Union of Russia and Co-Chairman of the International Fund for Humanitarian Aid and Co-operation.
He took part in numerous geographic expeditions and joined Thor Heyerdahl in his sea voyages on board the papyrus raft Ra and later on Ra-2 and Tigris. He also participated in the maritime expeditions of Timothy Severin and travelled to the North Pole and Everest as a medical adviser.
The Aframax tanker of the enhanced ice class (100,000 dwt), designed and built especially for oil transportation for Sakhalin-1 project, was named after Yuri Senkevich. This tanker meets all the national and international safety requirements and has been classified as 1A ice class by the Norwegian Classification Society Det Norske Veritas.
